Going the Extra Mile for Parkinson’s @ The Postal Swim

Giving something back to the community and at the same time swimming in the annual Long Distance Postal Swim was the order of the day last night.
Over sixty children took to the pool in two 1 hour sessions of continual swimming to attain long distance badges. Length after length were pounded out for this year’s chosen charity of Parkinson’s Research. For once the children wanted to be ‘ticked off’ by the parents on the pool side as they tried to achieve badges from 1 km (40 lengths) to 3 km (120 lengths) in just an hour. What is amazing is that they kept going and hardly seemed tired at the end, for them swimming it seems is just like a stroll in the park!

For those children that were beyond swimming in the event a land training session was set up that incorporated exercises often given to people suffering with Parkinson’s. This allowed the whole club to rally together for the cause. Informing the children of what Parkinson’s was came easy as the society sent the club children’s books which were brilliantly written explaining the effect of the disease on relatives. These can be found on the Parkinson website in pdf format if anyone is interested.

The children’s distances will be posted to the British Long Distance Swimming Association and badges will be sent to them for their efforts. No doubt parents will be sewing on this badge along with the others for the distance they attained. It is now the turn of the parents to put in some concentrated effort in – with a needle and thread of course!
