As divers stood ready to spin and tumble off the high boards at the end of Sheffield’s 50m pool they watched Belper swimmers along with hundreds of other competing in a high level grade one gala run be Rotherham Metro. Only swimmers of a high standard could attend with just a handful from Belper managing to make the cut.
Caitlin Oram, Samuel Brookes, Katy Dymond, William Brookes, Cameron Haynes, Sarah Dymond and Joshua Horobin all were in attendance.
All managed to reduce their personal bests with outstanding swims in the massive pool. Caitlin Oram managed to get a club record … only to be pushed off her podium by her friend Katy Dymond two minutes later. That’s how fierce the competition was!
But it was no rest for these two girls as sandwiched between the weekend event in Sheffield was the Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire Club League Competition. This was held at the other end of the county in Derby and so along with Samuel Brookes they all went in the evening down to swim for the club team.
The Mighty Marlin’s did not disappoint the cheering crowd at this club team event. Against local rivals from Derby Pheonix, Ripley, Chesterfield, City of Derby and Sherwood Colliery they put up a massive fight. Superb swimming from the whole squad saw the team take second place overall behind a strong Sherwood team.
Special mention must go to those children and parents that hammered down the M1 (at 50 miles per hour of course) to make the two events. In addition to this praise goes to little Phoebe ‘the bullet’ Barden who swam in three races over a period of six minutes and won the lot! Brilliant swimmers were also seen from the Skinner brothers, avoiding the pun that they swam out of their skins. The travelling supporters were in good voice as always and played their part in creating a fantastic atmosphere.
Well done the Marlin’s … swimming all weekend across the length of the county!
