Belper Marlins senior section went to the Derbyshire Championships at the Etwall Masters meet at Queens Leisure Centre in Derby on Saturday. Head Coach Mike Brett led the way with an almost effortless 100IM, inspiring all the following Marlins swimmers to dive, strive and streamline to the finish. It worked – the picture above shows multiple gold medallists and, with the points still to be finalised, Belper Marlins stand well placed as one of the best visiting clubs.
There were many outstanding performances, but special mentions go to the newly-crowned county champions, Sarah ‘speedy’ McGraw, Lorna ‘dashy’ Dashfield, Steve ‘the demon’ Dymond and particularly Gavin ‘blaster’ Brookes who took the blue riband men’s 100m Freestyle.
The relay events were another opportunity for Belper to shine, and they didn’t disappoint. Pipped in the medley by a youthful Chesterfield and cheered on by the best support in the cannon, Marlins were unlucky not to clinch gold. Next year promises much.
The full team of Belper stars comprised Lorna Dashfield, Alison Jelley, Sarah McGraw, Emma Whysall, Mike Brett, Gavin Brookes, Jim Corbett, Steve Dymond, Robert Rantzen and Paul Shrimpling.
